A relative of mine was hurt badly in an accident with a company vehicle and now the family is trying to figure out who to talk to. There seem to be a lot of firms advertising, but it is hard to tell who actually handles this type of case. How do you normally check that before committing to anyone?

Ask directly whether there are upfront costs, who would actually be handling the file, and how communication works. If the answers stay vague, that tells you something. Worth taking the time to compare a couple of options before signing anything.
